In this post, I am going to show you how to install WordPress CMS into the web server, I have divided the whole process into 2 articles.

WordPress installation consists of 4 big steps:

  1. Setup MySQL database for WordPress.
  2. Download WordPress files and edit the configuration file of the MySQL database setting.
  3. Upload all the WordPress files to the server.
  4. Run the installation process.

Setup MySQL database for WordPress

WordPress requires a database to store its settings, posts and pages etc. Therefore:

  1. Create a database in MySQL.
  2. Write down the details of the database: Database name, username, password for the next step.

There is no need to create any table as they will be created automatically during the installation.

Download WordPress files and edit the configuration file of the MySQL database setting

  1. Download the WordPress package from http://wordpress.org/.
  2. Unzip the WordPress package.
  3. Inside the wordpress folder, there is a PHP file named “wp-config-sample.php”.
  4. Rename the file into “wp-config.php”.
  5. Open the file with Notepad.
  6. Edit the file, input the details of the MySQL database, look for the needed editable part like:
    /** The name of the database for WordPress */
    define('DB_NAME', 'putyourdbnamehere');

    /** MySQL database username */
    define('DB_USER', 'usernamehere');

    /** MySQL database password */
    define('DB_PASSWORD', 'yourpasswordhere');

    /** MySQL hostname */
    define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

    /** Database Charset to use in creating database tables. */
    define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8');

    /** The Database Collate type. Don't change this if in doubt. */
    define('DB_COLLATE', '');
  7. After imputing all of the necessary details, save the file.

Upload all the WordPress files to the server

Upload all the files into the web server with a FTP client, I recommend a FTP client FileZilla.

Run the installation process

To install WordPress, simply type in the domain name of the website and follow the instructions in WordPress Installation Part 2.

Editor’s note: I use WordPress for most of my website. WordPress takes away my pain on the design. It takes care of the CSS and template so that I do not have to spend so much on the design. It also has different plugins to provide different functions to the website. The greatest part in my point of view is the CMS behind it which controls all setting and pages of the site. Hope you could enjoy it as much as I do.
